What does Literature Means..? (for them, for you, and for me)

Many people have different opinions and different reasons in defining the meaning of "Literature."

Most of the people said that it is any written material, some say that it can be feeling or emotions of those who wrote it, and some say that it can bring true facts or it can also give us inspirations and will give us a differen

t or better outlook in life.

I must say that everyone of us are different so it is normal for me that there individuals that has different definition of Literature.

So, let us take a look of different definition of Literature for some people, groups, sites, and even different authors.

• According to Wikipedia:

Literature is the art of written works. Literally translated, the word means "acquaintance with letters" (from Latin littera letter), and therefore the academic study of literature is know

n as Letters (as in the phrase "Arts and Letters"). In Western culture the most basic written literary types include Fiction and non-fiction.

• According to Rebbeca West (writer):

"Literature must be an analysis of experience and a synthesis of the findings into a unity"

• According to About.com:

Literature is a term used to describe written or spoken material. Broadly speaking, "literature" is used to describe anything from creative writing to more technical or scientific works, but the term is most commonly used to refer to works of the crea

tive imagination, including works of poetry, drama, fiction, and nonfiction.

• According to Oxford English Dictionary:

It is obvious that there are many definitions of the word "Literature," there are lot's more than the given above, because as said there are lot's of different people, but in a way even if there are words that are used in defining the word and there are some that are not, most of the definition are more likely the same if comprehended. there are even people that would have a item that they may find same as to the definition of the word. but if I were to choose of what definition of Literature I like the best I would probably choose the definition of it from the a site, it states that:

"Literature are writings in which expression and form, in connection with ideas of permanent and universal interest, are characteristic or

essential features, as poetry, novels, history, biography, and essays."

I choose this because it contains the essential on how Literary works are done, i which I think is important in defining a certain term.

hmmm... If I were to define Literature with a certain object, this is how I will do it:

"Literature is like a clock. a clock may be in different form, may be in Roman Numerals, or standard numbering. just like in Literature it can be prose, structural, or poetry. and also clocks can be in different styles, it can be simple, complex, or may have a complicated design, just like Literature, words containing it may be difficult to understand but it does not mean that it is not a form or art."
